Chapter Ten

Simon glared at the brave redhead with the indomitable will. She reminded him of a storm at sea, one that refused to blow itself out. Today Roanne wore a gown finer than anything he’d seen her wear in Ireland. He remembered thinking how she deserved satins and silks and felt a twinge of pride to have his opinion validated.

But that wasn’t enough. A coldness consumed him. “Your brothers don’t frighten me. Rather, they should fear me,” he said and stomped out of the room without allowing her a chance to respond and headed for the sanctuary of his library.

The patter of Roanne’s steps chased after him. “Wait, my lord.”

He whipped around. He wasn’t willing to hear any more of his tempting wife’s pleading. He told himself no amount of arguing would make him change his mind about her brothers, and the thought distressed him. “Stop embarrassing yourself. Cease dogging my footsteps.”

Roanne shook her head, making flaming ringlets dance around her face. “Face me, then. Where is your honor? You must heed my pleas.”

Whenever he found himself anywhere near his wife, his gaze focused on her mouth. Those well-defined lips hinted of kisses from an angel’s mouth. Every time he closed his eyes, he remembered the scent of her hair and the silky feel of her skin beneath his hands. One night in her arms and he could never forget her.

He suffered as no man. Abandoning his oath to never touch her, he drew Roanne against him and to his chagrin, their bodies molded into a perfect fit. Their eyes met in silent communication as he raised a hand, one finger stretching to trace the curve of her lips.

“Oh, Simon.” Soft light gleamed in her eyes. “I vow you won’t regret this. I’ll do anything to make you happy. Anything.”

He blew out a breath, and chose his words with deliberate intent. “Bring back the dead.”

She stiffened in his arms. Color drained from her cheeks. “I-I cannot. Grief consumes you. For a man who mistreated you? You must let bygones be bygones.”

He wanted to protest. Instead, he dropped his hands, experiencing a loss of epic portions at not touching her. He tried to relax and consider her feelings, but couldn’t forget the obvious. “I freely admit many people harbored ill-will toward Hugh, but the O’Caseys had the best motive to seek his death.”

Roanne pursed her lips at his claim. “Simon, we consummated our marriage. There can be no annulment. Accept it. We are one.”

He stared at her, dumbfounded. “Surely, you jest. You make it sound as if I should just forget Hugh.”

“That’s grief talking. Of course, you’ll always have him in your memories, but you have a new family. One that loves you. Or would, if you would let them do so. I confess at first about having doubts of my brothers’ participation, but they swore to me that they weren’t involved with your brother’s death and I believe them.”

Simon’s brows furrowed. Trust Roanne to defend her brothers. He knew better than be pulled in by her sweet lies.
